W.E. Cundiff project officially begins with groundbreaking event
The project to expand and renovate W.E. Cundiff Elementary officially began on the morning of August 28, 2024 when dozens of officials, school leaders and the entire school came out to formally break ground to mark the start of the project.
W.E. Cundiff Principal Ashley McCallum welcomed the invited guests, and the entire school staff and student body with a loud chant for Team Cundiff. McCallum thanked the staff and invited guests for attending and said that this project will be a new chapter in the long history of W.E. Cundiff Elementary, which was known as Hardy Road Elementary when she was a student at this school.
Roanoke County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ken Nicely followed McCallum, thanking many individuals who played a significant role in bringing this project to fruition including the Roanoke County school board, the Roanoke County board of supervisors, Branch Builds, RRMM and many school staff. After a long time planning, Dr. Nicely said he was excited to break ground and get this project underway.
Vinton school board member, Tim Greenway, thanked the Vinton community for their support and noted that members of the Cundiff family were on hand to mark this momentous occasion. Greenway said the improvements planned for W.E. Cundiff were needed for many years and he shared the Vinton community's appreciation that these needed improvements were finally underway.
McCallum then led the entire school in a loud countdown to break ground, formally beginning this construction project that is expected to be completed in fall 2026.
